005 – SPHIA
Specified Psychiatric Hospital for Isolation and Aegis
Since the revision of the penal code in 2007, special psychiatric
hospitals were constructed in various regions across the country.
The purpose of these facilities was to administer proper treatments
to those who are suffering from mental illnesses and have committed
serious crimes, so they can be reintegrated into society.
The layout of these facilities and the course of treatments there
are undisclosed to respect the privacy of the patients.
All that's known about these facilities are their locations.
SPHIA, the facility in which Inubushi Keiko is institutionalized,
is located on Hokkaido's Aosagi Island.
ＳＰＨＩＡ／スフィア
Specified Psychiatric Hospital for Isolation and Aegis
2007年の刑法改正により全国各地に新設された
特別精神病院。
重大な犯罪行為をした精神障害者に
適切な治療を施し社会復帰させることを
目的とする。
施設の構造や治療内容は患者のプライバシーを
尊重し一切明かされていない。
公開されているのはその場所のみである。
犬伏景子が収容されているスフィアは
北海道の%TS004青鷺島%TE （あおさぎじま）にある。
正式名称：
隔離と保護のための特定精神医療施設。
006 – Aosagi Island
Located approximately 5 km west of Rebun Island,
Aosagi Island was uninhabited until the construction of SPHIA.
It possesses no airport, and the only way to get there is by a boat
which departs from Wakkanai Harbor on an irregular basis.
Furthermore, entry to the island without a government-issued permit
is prohibited.
青鷺島／あおさぎじま
青鷺島は礼文島の西方約５ｋｍの洋上に
浮かぶ孤島で、スフィアが建設されるまでは
無人島だった。
飛行場はなく、稚内港から不定期に出航する
船だけが唯一の交通手段である。
通常、この島には政府発行の許可証がなければ
上陸することはできない。

While it is highly variable and difficult to measure accurately,
the best estimates for personal physical space place it around
60 centimeters to either side, 70 centimeters in front, and 40
centimeters behind the body for the average westerner.

Global Positioning System
A system which uses man-made satellites to calculate the position
of a receiver (a person, boat, plane, car, etc.) on a 3D grid
system which spans the entire Earth.

013 – Lucid Dream
When one is dreaming, yet at the same time conscious of the fact
that he or she is currently dreaming. It can also refer to the
technique of entering such a dream. It is said that those who
are having lucid dreams realize that they are in a dream and
are able to direct the continuation of the dream according to
their own will.
明晰夢
〔Lucid Dream〕
夢の中で『自分は今、夢をみているのだ』と
自覚しながら見る夢のこと。
あるいは、その技法。
明晰夢を見ている人は、
夢の中でそれが夢である事を自覚しており、
その夢の続きを自分の意志で
決めることが出来るという。
014 – Laplace’s Demon
A concept proposed by Pierre-Simon Laplace,
a French mathematician and philosopher.
Suppose there exists a "demon," that is,
an entity that possesses the ability to know,
at a certain moment, the state of all things in the universe.
Then, no matter how brief this moment is,
it would always be enough for the demon to
unravel everything that happened in the past
and will happen in the future.
What Laplace was trying to say with this is that,
basically, "everything which occurs in the
world has been predetermined from the beginning."
That, no matter how big or how small an event is,
its occurrence is by no means accidental, but in fact inevitable.
In philosophy, this is called causal determinism.
ラプラスの悪魔
フランスの数学者にして天文学者
『ピエール・シモン・ド・ラプラス』が提唱した概念。
ある瞬間の、世界中のありとあらゆる全ての
状態を、正確に知ることができる『悪魔』という
生き物がいたとする。
たとえそれが、いかに短い瞬間であったとしても、
悪魔にとっては未来や過去の状態を
うかがい知るには充分なのだ。
要するに、ラプラスは『世界中で起こる
全ての出来事は、初めから何もかも決まっている』
と言う事が言いたかったのだ。
どんな小さな出来事でも、大きな出来事でも、
それらは偶然ではなく必然的に起こるもの
なのだと。
哲学の用語では、これを『決定論的世界観』と
言う。

018 – Cloning and Laws on Cloning
The bodies of all living things are derived from biological
blueprints called genes (DNA). The methods used to analyze and
manipulate the information stored in genes, recombination,
synthesis, and other similar technologies, are collectively
classified under the umbrella term of genetic engineering.
Currently, the technology enjoying the limelight in the field of
genetic engineering is cloning technology.
The term "clone" is from biology. It refers to a life form
produced through asexual reproduction, whose cells
are perfectly genetically identical to those of its parent.
Those born from this technology are called human clones.
（As an aside, the word clone is derived from the Greek word "klon,"
meaning "twig")
In 1997, the birth in England of the world's first somatic cell
clone, a sheep named Dolly, was announced. The successful creation
of Dolly shed new light on the potentials of genetic engineering.
Dolly was different from the embryonic cell clones that had
previously been born from reproductive cell tissue. She was
cloned from the mammary tissue (somatic cells) of an adult sheep,
making her the first "somatic cell clone using nuclear transfer"
(hereinafter simply "clone") in the world.
In other words, the success of the technology to create a
"somatic cell clone using nuclear transfer" served to verify the
hypothesis that "if somatic cells were available, it would be
possible to bring any animal back to life as an exact copy, any
number of times."
After that, various transgenic clones were created,
but since the process of their birth (cell development) was viewed
as diverging too far from the natural way, human cloning research
was banned, or otherwise strictly regulated.
In the year 2001, the pronounced "human-related cloning regulation
law" (cloning law) was being enforced in Japan. Additionally,
principle countries such as England, France and Germany had
prohibited the creation of human clones, calling it "an affront
to human dignity."
However, the combined power of forces such as sheer human curiosity,
infertility problems, and possibly "the wish to meet with lost
loved ones again" would not let it be stopped altogether.
Thus, illegal research continued behind the scenes, and before long,
the birth cries of the very first human clones were heard in the
world. As a result, various protests and controversies took root,
and in many countries, the ethical issue was back on the table
for the furious debate about to unfold.
In the midst of this, a trial concerning the issue
of the birth of clones was held.
——The year was 2010.
The accused, a certain lone scientist.
He had created a clone of his own son.
And the reason for that, he said, was simply
"I just wanted to see my son, who was killed
in an accident, one more time, no matter the cost."
But before long, his secret had been revealed, and thus judgment
was pronounced upon him.
And the result of the judges' decision was... life imprisonment.
However, when the content of the cloned boy's testimony
was reported, it caused a complete turnover of public opinion,
which grew powerful enough to lead to amendment of the law in
the end. So what was it that the boy said so plaintively through
his tears?
"Papa didn't do anything wrong. I'm so grateful to Papa. Because
Papa is the one who gave me this life..."
And so, that same year saw the lifting of the ban of the birth of
human clones. Now anyone was free to use cloning technologies as
a form of infertility treatment, as long as permission from the
proper authorities has been granted. Since then, legal human
clones have continued to be born; it has even been estimated
that by the year 2019, one to two of every 1000 primary school
children will be clones.
As for the revised cloning law...
For it to have been struck down by public opinion rallied
simply for the sake of the happiness of one small boy, perhaps
it truly was a law that stood in opposition to human kindness.
However, even after the amendment of the law, many problems
still remained. Cloned people faced opposition and discrimination.
As previously stated, the paradoxical method of their birth
led some people to shun them.
Since the clones' genetic information was perfectly identical
to that of their nucleoplasm provider ("genome mother" or
"original"), they were mockingly referred to as "copies of the
original." (However, strictly speaking, this belief is mistaken.
At the time of a clone's creation, he or she inherits the
mitochondria of the woman who provided the unfertilized egg
("host mother"). Since the genome mother and host mother are
two different people, the clone cannot be said to be an exact
replica of the original.)
Perhaps there is really no solution to such problems, unless
humanity gets more accustomed to clones with time and deepens
their understanding of genetic engineering.
Until then, clones and their supporters can only keep on hoping,
believing that the day will surely come when clones can live
without fear...
Finally, we shall introduce a certain person who had a global
influence in the field of genetic engineering.
He is Japan's Professor Morino Shigezou.
Since the latter part of the 20th Century, Professor Morino
has taken part in the international Human Genome Project, where
he had been credited with the discovery of a groundbreaking
method for analyzing the sequence of DNA. Furthermore, the
professor himself is known to have been creating human clones.
However, there are opinions as to exactly what number of
successfully produced clones his achievements amount to
(if any at all), and the truth remains uncertain.
クローンとクローン法
生物の体を作る設計図とも言うべき遺伝子（DNA）。
この遺伝子情報を分析し、異なった遺伝子との
組み換えや合成等を行う技術——
これらの技術を総称したものが遺伝子工学で
ある。
現在、遺伝子工学の中で最も脚光を浴びている
のがクローン技術だ。
クローンとは無性生殖による増殖で生じた、
遺伝的に親とまったく均一な細胞集団を指す
生物学の用語。
この技術で誕生した人間はクローン人間と
呼ばれる。
（余談だが、クローンという言葉の語源は
ギリシャ語の『Klon＝小枝』）
1997年、イギリスで世界初の体細胞クローン羊
『ドリー』の誕生が発表された。
このドリーの成功は、遺伝子のもつ可能性に
新たな光を投げかけることになった。
ドリーはそれまでに作られてきた生殖細胞からの
クローン『受精卵クローン』とは違い、
成獣の乳腺細胞（体細胞）から生み出された
『体細胞核移植クローン（以降『クローン』と記す）』
なのである。
つまり、『体細胞核移植』技術により、
『体細胞さえあれば、同じ遺伝子情報を持った
動物の再生が、何度でも可能』ということを
証明したのである。
その後、様々なトランスジェニック・クローンが
生み出されたが、その誕生（発生）過程が
あまりにも常道を逸脱しすぎているゆえに、
人間のクローン研究に対しては禁止、
または厳しい規制が科せれた。
日本では2001年に『ヒトに関するクローン技術
などの規制に関する法律（クローン規制法）』を
施行している。
このほか英、仏、ドイツなど主要国は
『人間の尊厳を冒す』として、クローン人間づくりを
法律で禁じた。
しかし、人間の『知的好奇心』や『不妊問題』、
あるいは『失ったものへの悲しみと再会への願い』
といった強い想いを押し留めることは出来ず、
秘密裏に非合法な研究は進められ、
やがてこの世界に何人かのクローン人間が
産声を上げることとなった。
こうして様々な騒動が巻き起こり、
各国間では倫理問題を巡って激しい論争が
繰り広げられた。
そんな中、クローンの誕生を巡って、
ひとつの裁判が日本で執り行われた。
——2010年のことである。
被告人は、とあるひとりの科学者。
彼は自分の息子のクローンを作った。
『事故で亡くなった息子に、どうしてももう一度
会いたかった』
というのがその理由だった。
やがてその秘密が洩れ、裁きにかけられた。
そして判決の結果……無期懲役が決まった。
ところが、そのクローンの少年の証言内容が
報道されると、世論が一気にひっくり返り、
最終的には法律を改正させるだけの力になった。
少年は涙ながらに、
世界にこう訴えかけたのだ——
『パパは何も悪いことなんかしてない。
僕はパパに感謝してる。だって、僕の命はパパが
与えてくれたものだから……』
かくして、この年から人間のクローン受精が
解禁された。
省庁の許可さえ得られれば、
誰でもクローン受精による不妊治療が受けられる
ようになった。
以後、合法的にクローン人間は生み出されていき、
2019年を迎える頃には、小学生1000人中
ひとりかふたり程度の割合でクローン人間、
というのが常識にまでなる。
改正されたクローン法……
それは、たったひとりの少年の小さな幸せの為に
世論が作り上げた、人類の優しさの詰まった法律、
なのかもしれない。
しかし法改正後も、さらに大きな問題が残されて
いた。
クローン人間に対する差別である。
先にも述べたように、その誕生過程の奇異性から
クローン達は疎まれてしまうのだ。
クローンは核細胞提供者（『ゲノムマザー』もしくは
『オリジナル』）とまったく同一の遺伝子情報を
持っているため、『オリジナルのコピー』などいう
差別用語で呼ばれ、揶揄された。
（しかし厳密な意味では、この認識は誤っている。
クローン生成の際に未受精卵を提供する女性
(『ホストマザー』)の遺伝子情報をクローンは
自らのミトコンドリアに受け継いでしまっている。
ゲノムマザーとホストマザーが同一人物でない
限り、オリジナルとクローンは完全な同一体とは
言えないのだ）
これらの問題を解決していくには、時間と人々が
遺伝子工学という分野に理解を深めていく
必要があるとしか言えないだろう。
クローン達が怯えることなく暮らせる世の中……
そんな時代が、いつかやってくると信じて——。
最後に、遺伝子工学において
世界的な権威のある人物を紹介しておこう。
日本の『守野茂蔵（モリノ・シゲゾウ）』博士である。
守野博士は20世紀後半より世界的規模で
行われ始めた『ヒトゲノム計画』に参加し、
DNAシークエンスの画期的な解析法を発見した、
とされている。また、博士自身も
クローン人間を生み出した経歴がある。
ただし、その成功例はひとりとも十数人とも、
あるいはゼロとも言われ、真相は定かでない。

020 – Dominant and Alternate Personalities
In a person exhibiting so-called multiple personality disorder,
the personality which is in control of the body for the longest
periods of time is called the dominant personality
(this is most often the "original" baseline personality
which the person has had since birth).
Other personae which assume control of the body from time to
time for shorter periods are called alternate personalities.
主人格・副人格
いわゆる多重人格において、最も長い間、
身体を支配している人格を主人格と呼ぶ
（出生して最初に持つ人格＝オリジナル人格が
主人格となることが多い）。
主人格とは別に、身体を短期間支配する人格を、
副人格と呼ぶ。
021 – Rejection
The refusal of the body to accept transplanted foreign tissue;
a defensive reaction meant to protect it against infection.
When an organ or similar tissue from another person is transplanted,
it is viewed as a foreign substance by the immune system,
which will attempt to destroy the tissue and expel it from the body.
This type of immune system attack is called rejection.

身体には、異物を排除するための防御の仕組み
＝免疫が備わっている。
移植手術などによって他人の臓器を移植する
場合、身体にとっては異物である移植臓器を
排除しようと免疫が働いてしまう。
その免疫による攻撃を、拒絶反応と呼ぶ。

Neurons send messages to each other

やりとりすることとなる。
024 – Host Computer
In a network of two or more interconnected computers,
the most powerful computer in the group, which
performs most of the computations and network control,
is known as the host computer.

接続されている二台以上のコンピューターのうち、
大容量をもち主演算・制御を受け持つ

接続されている２台以上のコンピューターのうち、
ホストコンピューターから指示を受ける側の

028 – French Mercenary Legion
(a.k.a. French Foreign Legion)
A unit in the French Army. Created in 1831
by Louis Philippe, the then King of the French.
The purpose of its creation was to reduce wartime casualties
amongst native French soldiers by using mercenaries
from other countries and foreign nationals instead.
The Mercenary Legion troops know not of the word "surrender,"
nor are they taught how to act when captured;
they are trained to fight to the death.
The Mercenary Legion has fought in many conflicts
such as the French conquest of Algeria, the Indochina War
and the Algerian Civil War; many foreign soldiers
lost their lives in these conflicts.
Even now, any French troops dispatched overseas
are almost always from the Mercenary Legion.
They were recently deployed in areas such as Afghanistan and Kosovo.
フランス傭兵部隊
フランスの正規軍で、フランス陸軍に属している。
1831年、フランス国王ルイ・フィリップにより
創設される。
戦争の際、自国の兵士を使わず、
他国からの傭兵を使えば自国民が傷つかずに
すむという考えで作られたらしい。
傭兵部隊に降伏の文字はなく、
捕虜になった際の教育などされない。
死ぬまで戦うよう訓練される。
アルジェリア征服、インドシナ戦争、
アルジェリア内戦などに傭兵部隊は送り込まれ、
多くの外国人兵が命を落としている。
現在でもフランスが海外に派兵する際には
必ずといって良いほど傭兵部隊を送っている。
最近では、アフガン、コソボ等に派兵されてる
様子。
029 – Knife Maintenance
As a knife is used, it will gradually grow dull over time.
To maintain an optimum level of sharpness, daily care is essential.
The most basic form of daily maintenance is to polish the
blade after each use. Water is very bad for knives!
Most modern knives are made from stainless steel,
which is resistant to rust;
however, this doesn't mean that they are rustproof.
Therefore, they should be dried off quickly after coming
into contact with water.
To return a dull knife to its sharpened state,
different methods of honing and touch-up exist.
Honing refers to sharpening a knife.
To touch up a knife means
to improve its ability to cut.
When a knife becomes dull, it's best to think about seeing to
it right away.
ナイフの手入れ
ナイフは使っていくうちにだんだん切れなく
なってくる。
ナイフの切れ味を維持するためには日頃の
手入れが重要になってくる。
日常の手入れの基本は、使ったあとは刃を
磨いておくこと。
ナイフは水が苦手！ 今のナイフは
ステンレス製が主流。
ステンレスは錆びにくい素材だが、
錆びないわけではない。
よって水にぬらしたあとは手入れが欠かせない。
切れ味を取り戻す手法には、
ホーニングとタッチアップというものがある。
ホーニングとは、ナイフを研ぐこと。
タッチアップとは、
ナイフの切れ味をよくする作業のこと。
ナイフの切れ味が落ちたときの応急手当と
考えて頂ければいい。

An aviation device that automatically records speed, altitude,
and other information about the flight in real time.
Housed in a very sturdy casing which makes it highly resistant
to damage by fire or force trauma.
フライトレコーダー
飛行高度など、飛行に関するデータを自動的に
時刻とともに記録する装置。
耐熱・耐震性の堅牢な箱に納められている。
033 – Solar Wind
A stream of plasma which emanates from the upper atmosphere
of the sun. It is composed mainly of electromagnetic waves
and protons, and moves at speeds of 350-700 kilometers per second.
Comets which leave trails tracing to the far side of the sun
are blown there by the solar wind.
It does not reach as far as the surface of the Earth
and thus has no effect on terrestrial magnetism;
however, magnetic storms, the aurora borealis, or disruptions
in the ionosphere are all caused by this solar wind.
太陽風

プラズマの流れ。
主に電子と陽子から成り、
速さは毎秒約350〜700キロメートル。
彗星が太陽の反対側へ尾を引くのは太陽風で
吹き飛ばされるためである。
地磁気のために地球上には到達しないが、
磁気嵐・極光・電離層の乱れなどは太陽風が
要因となって起こる。

"Connecting you from anywhere in the world" was the catchphrase.
However, in practice, due to different company systems,
types of available satellites and so on, there are cases in

035 – Brocken Specter
On a high mountain at sunrise or sunset,
when one is standing in front of a bank of fog,
the sunlight shining from behind you
may project your shadow onto the fog, surrounded by a ring
of rainbow light. This is called a Brocken specter.
The resulting gigantic shadows, like those of a monster,
have been called the phantoms of the Brocken.
The name of the phenomenon comes from the Brocken, a mountain
in Bavaria, Germany, where it has often been observed.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
A handbook of diagnostic criteria for mental disorders
published by the American Psychiatric Association.
The title is followed by its revision number.
Published editions so far include the
DSM-I (1952), DSM-II (1968),
DSM-III (1980), DSM-III-R (1987), and
DSM-IV(1994).
This manual is, so to speak, a "simplified guide to the
diagnosis of mental illnesses."
Mental illnesses may affect a person in many forms,
and are notoriously difficult to diagnose.
It is also not uncommon for separate examining doctors
to differ in their diagnoses.
To help eliminate such errors, the DSM is used as a guide
for doctors to determine the name of the illness based on
observed symptoms.
By asking the patient certain questions, such as about said
patient's condition, and checking their responses against
the data in the DSM, even an inexperienced doctor can
establish a diagnosis and begin appropriate treatment.
Note: Since the time the story of Remember11 takes place,
there have been two further editions of the DSM: the
DSM-IV-TR (2000), an expansion of the DSM-IV with updated
diagnostic codes and extra information on each diagnosis,
and the upcoming DSM-V (planned for 2012).

このマニュアルは、いわば『精神病の診断早見表』

精神病は、個人によって様々な形態があり、
病名を診断することが難しい。

そのような不具合をなくすため、
表に現れた症状だけを元に病名を判断する
指針として、ＤＳＭは用いられる。
患者から症状を聞き、ＤＳＭに照らし合わせれば、

042 – DSM-IV
The fourth revision of the DSM, published in 1994.
In this edition, the name of the illness formerly
called multiple personality disorder was changed to
dissociative identity disorder.
It was there that the illness called DID was "born."
Incidentally, dissociative personality disorder is still
referred to as multiple personality disorder in other official
writings, such as the ICD-10.
In the Japanese edition of the DSM, the latter term is used.
Note: about the ICD-10 was added by me. Also, in that line
I admit I'm not 100% sure of what the difference between
乖離性同一性障害 and 解離性同一性障害 is; they both refer to
DID if I'm not mistaken.

043 – Borderline Personality Disorder
alias: ambulatory schizophrenia, preschizophrenia,
schizotypal disorder
For a patient to be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder,
they must display symptoms matching five or more of the
following criteria.
1) Inability to distinguish fantasy from reality.
2) A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships.
3) Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable
self-image or sense of self.
4) Feelings of disconnection from reality.
5) Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, threats or
self-injuring behavior.
6) Chronic feelings of emptiness.
7) Marked affective instability due to a marked reactivity
of mood.
8) Inappropriate anger or difficulty controlling anger.
9) Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation, delusions or
severe dissociative symptoms.
10) Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.
Additionally, impulsivity in at least two areas that may be
self-damaging, including:
1) impulsive spending
2) promiscuous sex
3) substance abuse
4) reckless driving
5) binge eating
are observed.
A borderline personality disorder sufferer's personal
relationships, self-image, emotional stability, and
particularly indulgence in impulsive acts are heavily
influenced and impaired by the disorder, with the onset
of symptoms typically occurring during adolescence or
young adulthood.
Though said to be a severe impairment to normal life,
relatively few of the symptoms are detected by most people.
It is characterized by fluctuating emotional states
and abnormal outbursts of anger or violence.
Furthermore, many sufferers show frantic attempts
to avoid abandonment.
This feeling often manifests itself in the form of self-harm
behaviors.
Sufferers often report having a foggy mental state,
being unable to perceive things clearly,
or feeling as if they will go to pieces,
as well as feeling lost and unsure of their own identity.
Moreover, many say that this feeling of having no self-control
is what leads them to start self-injuring.
Individuals with borderline personality disorder
tend to view the world in black and white,
with all people viewed strictly as either enemy or ally;
if they think an ally is in danger of leaving them,
many individuals will become anxious and deliberately harm
themselves or otherwise cause trouble in an effort to get
the ally to stay.
However, it is important to remember that the individual
is not doing these things because they want to,
and as with many other similar illnesses of "the heart,"
their behavior does not reflect their true personality.
Note: a lot of this entry, especially the list of criteria,
was directly copied from the English DSM-IV-TR; thus, there
may be sections which are not 100% direct translations.
Notable exceptions are noted below:
- The list of aliases for borderline in Japanese were all
slightly different writings of the same word. I localized
these and substituted some other names which the disorder
has gone by.
- In the list of symptoms, several items vary from the actual
9-item checklist in the DSMV-IV-TR, namely:
- #1 (not an actual listed symptom; the actual #1 is
"[f]rantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.")
- #4 (also not an actual symptom; real #4 is "[i]mpulsivity
in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging",
which comprises the sublist)
- #10 (doesn't exist; there are only 9 criteria. The listed
#10 is the real checklist's #4)
境界性人格障害
別名：境界例・境界例人格障害・ボーダーライン
症状として次のうち５つ以上あてはまるものを、
境界性人格障害と呼ぶ。
１)現実や想像の中での見捨てられ感。
２)不安定で激しい対人関係
３)著明で持続的な不安定な自己像や自己観。
４)現実喪失感。
５)自殺・自傷行為など自虐的思考。

境界性人格障害は、対人関係、自己像、感情の
不安定および著しい衝動性の広範な様式で、
成人期早期に始まり、種々の状況で明らかになる。
障害という名前はついているが、比較的誰にでも
あらわれる症状も多い。
特徴的なものとして、感情の波、起伏が異常に
激しいことがあげられる。
そしてその中で、どうしようもない取り残され感
と、それをとどめるための狂わんばかりの努力を
見せたりする。
自傷行為も多く見られるようである。
自分が霧の中にでもいるような気がして、
なんだかはっきりしなかったり、自分が
このままバラバラになってしまうのではないか、
というような感情を伴い、また、
自分はいったい何者なのか、という思いに
悩まされることもある。
そして、うまくコントロールがきかなくなり、
自傷行為に発展してしまうのだ。
境界性人格障害の場合、周囲の人々を
自分の敵か味方かに頭の中でふりわけ、味方と
している人が自分から離れていこうとすると、
不安になり、わざとトラブルを起こすような
こともある。
しかし、決してやりたくてやっているわけではなく、
これはいろんなココロの病気に通じていること
だが、それはその人本来の性格ではない。
044 – Jungfrau
A mountain range in the Swiss Bernese Alps.
Its peak stands 4158 meters above sea level. The name means
"virgin peak." It was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.

045 – Court-Appointed Attorney
In accordance with both the Criminal Procedure Code and
the Japanese Constitution, the suspect or defendant in any
case is entitled to legal counsel.
However, though everyone has the right to counsel,
in reality, there are many people who are too poor
to hire an attorney to defend themselves.
Therefore, as written in the Constitution, "When a defendant
is not able to appoint an attorney, that duty falls upon
the state" (article 37, paragraph 3).
Thus, in cases where the defendant's poverty
prevents them from being able to seek the services of an attorney,
the court will appoint a public defender to assist them,
with the cost being borne by the state.
国選弁護人
刑事訴訟法は、憲法にもとづき、被疑者または
被告人は何時でも弁護人を選任できる
としている。
ところが、弁護人を選任できるとしても、
弁護料を払えない貧しい人達は事実上、

A galaxy approximately 2,500,000 lightyears from Earth.
A spiral galaxy, its shape is that of an elliptical coil.
In Greek mythology, Andromeda
was the name of an Ethiopian princess.
Her mother, Cassiopeia, bragged that she was more beautiful
than the sea nymphs known as the Nereids.
The sea god Poseidon, who was fond of the Nereids,
was angered by her words and sent a sea monster to
lay waste to the coast of her kingdom.
The king went to consult an oracle for help.
This oracle told him that only sacrificing
Andromeda would return peace to the kingdom.
Andromeda was chained to a rock and left
as a sacrifice to the monster.
At that time, Perseus, carrying the freshly-severed
head of the Medusa in a sack, happened to come along.
Uncovering the head before the monster's eyes,
Perseus turned it to stone.
Perseus then took Andromeda as his wife.
When Andromeda died, she was placed among the stars
and became a constellation alongside her husband Perseus,
her father Cepheus, her mother Cassiopeia, and the great
sea serpent. However, because of Cassiopeia's pride, she was
placed in the heavens such that the chair in which she sits
appears upside-down half the time.

A physical condition in which the core body temperature is
abnormally low, causing it to gradually fall further and further.
May result in death.

048 – Whiteout
A weather condition in which the field
of vision is obscured by white due to
windblown snow in the air, greatly diminishing
one's ability to discern vertical/horizontal
directions and distance. It can be described
as a "white darkness" of sorts.
There is also another form of a whiteout
which is caused by diffuse reflections from
snowy surfaces, clouds, and the like.
In this case, the air becomes saturated with
white light, rendering movement and the gathering
of visual information virtually impossible.

The presence of snow cornices make it very difficult
to tell where the actual ridge ends.

From the Latin, literally meaning "god from the machine."
A frequently-used plot device in old plays and literature, where,
in the midst of a seemingly hopeless situation,
a previously unseen character or object will suddenly appear
and provide a convenient resolution to the story.
Use of this type of device in a story later
came to be called by this name.
Frequently seen in the Greek tragedies of Euripides,
whose conclusions were often marked by a god appearing from
above and being lowered onto the stage via a mechanism similar
to a crane.
Aristotle, in his writings on aesthetics,
argued that all the elements of a story
should arise internally (naturally and necessarily),
following up the previous actions in the play,
and opposed the use of this device, saying that
the sudden deus ex machina appearance of a previously unseen
character in the middle of the play (contingent on the needs
of the plot) was poor storytelling.

053 – Thing-In-Itself
The central concept of the philosophy of Immanuel Kant,
an eighteenth-century German philosopher.
It refers not to the object's phenomenon characteristic,
that which concerns empirical recognition,
but to the actual object itself, the very substance of
the phenomenon's origin, independent of any subjectivity.
It means that we can only make sense of the phenomenon, and
can never directly "know" the actual object(s) or way(s).
The thing-in-itself is not something which can be understood,
only contemplated; however, the contemplation itself is
a sort of transcendental freedom.

054 – Memory Transplant
Memory loss and memory transplantation——
The difference between the two is as follows.
Suppose that a given entity, X,
has a contiguous memory (we may also call it
a record) composed of ABCDEF.
Memory loss, to put it simply, is a state wherein,
for example, parts B, D, and F in the A〜F sequence are lost,
and the only memories which can be recalled are ACE.
On the other hand, the memory transplant mentioned
herein refers to a state where, for example, the memory parts
A, C, and E are embedded into an initially empty, "zero" state
memory. Both cases are similar in that X does not remember
anything besides ACE; the crucial difference, however, lies
in the question of "whether the 'rest' is recoverable or not."
In the case of a memory loss, it is possible that
X would still have parts B, D, and F residing somewhere in the mind.
Thus X might perhaps be able
to recover these lost memories.
On the other hand, if X had had these memories transplanted,
then it would mean that BDF had never existed in the first place.
In this case, X is left with no other alternative but to
accumulate new memories over time.
So then, if by any chance, this memory content of mine
was transplanted....
Just whose ACE memories are these, I wonder?
The fact remains that "my consciousness" belongs to me,
but it is in fact possible that "my memory" is
one that was originally someone else's and not mine.
And that this someone had planted the ACE-reduced memories
inside me, so that even I myself am not aware of how and
why that happened exactly.
Why not A〜F, but ACE...?
Why didn't they transplant BDF as well...?
Could it be that...
It's not that they didn't transplant them,
but... that they couldn't?
Could it be that, just like me, this other person lacks BDF?
Can I assume that this limited knowledge composed only of ACE
was all that was available to this person?
And that, therefore, it was for this reason that
this person couldn't put any other memories inside me?
It might be that I'm only able to know
what this person knows, and if this person doesn't know
something, neither can I.
My memory and this person's memory are the same.
......was what I thought.
記憶移植
記憶喪失と記憶移植——。
両者の差とはこういうことだ。
例えば仮に、とある媒体Xに刷り込まれたABCDEF
からなる連続した記憶（記録といってもいい）が
あったとしよう。
記憶喪失とは、簡単に言うと、
このA〜Fの記憶のうち、BDFというものが欠落し、
ACEしか思い出せない状態のことだ。
逆にここで言う記憶移植とは、まずまっさらな記憶
『ゼロ』があり、そこにACEという記憶を
埋め込まれた状態のことを指す。
両者とも、ACEしか思い出せない
という点においては共通だが、致命的な違いは
『救いがあるかどうか』というところにある。
記憶喪失では、XにはBDFが残っている
可能性がある。
だからもしかしたら、それらを再生できるかも
知れない。
しかし記憶移植されたXには、
初めからBDFなんてものは存在しないのだ。
この場合には、新たに記憶を、随時追加して
いかなければならない。
さて、もしもオレのこの記憶内容が、
移植されたものだとしたら……。
その記憶ACEとは、本来誰のものだったの
だろうか？
『オレの意識』がオレのものであることに
間違いはないが、『オレの記憶』だけは、
オレではない何者かの所有物なのかも知れない。
その何者かは、どんな経緯があったのかは
知らないけれど、とにかくオレの内部にACEという
限定された記憶を埋め込んだ。
なぜA〜FではなくACEなのか……？
どうしてBDFは移植しなかったのか……？
もしかしたら……。
移植しなかったのではなく、
できなかった、のか……？
その人物も、オレと同じようにBDFを
知らないのではないか……？
ACEという限定された知識だけしか
持っていないのではないか……？
だから、それだけしかオレの内部に刷り込むことが
できなかった。
オレは、彼の知り得る情報のみを知り得ていて、
彼の知り得ない情報は
知り得ないのかもしれない。
オレの記憶と彼の記憶は同じ。
……そんな気がした。
055 – Now
It is 2011 here in the cabin shelter; in SPHIA, it is 2012.
She exists a year in the future for me, so maybe "now" is not
an appropriate name for it.
But there's no way around that anymore.
No matter how you look at it, the fact remains that
it is still "now" to me and Fuyukawa Kokoro.
Having felt out of place from the normal flow of history,
we are living within our own designated "time" now.
The flow of time that she and I experience and the
flow of time in the rest of the world are different.
If, for example, the latter is represented as
"A→B→C→D→E→F→......U→V→W→X→Y→Z"
then the time flow that I'm experiencing becomes
"A→V→C→X→E→Z,"
and that which Fuyukawa Kokoro experiences becomes
"U→B→W→D→Y→F."
Therefore, whenever I bring up time-related
concepts such as "now," "just now," "today," "tomorrow" and so on,
these are supposed to be understood and hold meaning
in accordance with my individual timeline of "A→V→C→X→E→Z."
On a side note, ever since I've been experiencing
this personality exchange phenomenon, the concepts of
"next year" and "last year" no longer apply to me either.
Now that I'm in the Mount Akakura shelter, both 2011 and 2012
are, in a certain sense, "this year" to me.

となり、冬川こころにとってのそれは、

だから、オレが『今』とか『さっき』とか『今日』とか
『明日』とかの時間概念を想起した場合には、
それらは基本的に『A→V→C→X→E→Z』という
オレ固有の時間直線に則った上での意味を
示していることになる。
余談だが、この人格交換現象に巻き込まれた
オレには『来年』や『去年』といった概念がない。

2011年も2012年も、ある意味『今年』なのだから。

to interpret a series of cards with ambiguous,
bilaterally symmetric inkblot designs.
The answers are then analyzed so as to try and
determine that person's personality characteristics.

059 – Skepticism
A school of thought in classical philosophy. With human
cognizance being highly subjective and relative, it is very
unlikely that everything one perceives is absolutely true.
Therefore, all things should be viewed with doubt initially;
final judgments on anything, e.g. new information, should be
suspended until it has been thoroughly investigated and proven
to be veracious. This is skepticism.
懐疑論
人間の認識は主観的相対的であるとして、
絶対的真理の認識の可能性を疑い究極的な

060 – I’m a Seagull
Kokoro had said that these are "beautiful words."
However, in reality, this phrase is not exactly
something one should be very awestruck by.
"Seagull" in Russian would be "chayka."
And incidentally, "Chayka" was also the call sign, something
akin to a nickname, of Vostok 6.
In other words, just as an astronaut on one of the Apollo
spacecraft missions would contact the command center:
"This is Apollo, this is Apollo, Houston, do you copy?"
Tereshkova had contacted the respective command center for
the Vostok 6 with "This is Seagull, this is Seagull."
When this phrase was translated into Japanese,
it was mistakenly translated as 『私はカモメ』, i.e. "I am a seagull."
As a result, it became widely known in Japan
as Tereshkova's poetic description of herself floating
in the void of space.
An interesting fact to note: the Vostok 1 that Gagarin piloted
was called "Kedr" - "Cedar."
If that name was used as the call sign of Vostok 6, perhaps
such a mistranslation would not have occurred.
私はカモメ
こころは『私はカモメ』という言葉を
『素敵な表現だ』と言った。
しかし実際には、これはたいして感動するような
言葉ではない。
ロシア語で、カモメのことを『チャイカ』という。
そして『チャイカ』というのは、ボストーク６号の

というのと同じような意味で、
テレシコワは

管制塔に向かって送信しただけだったのである。
これが日本語に訳されるときに誤まって
『私はカモメ』とされてしまったために、
日本では、あたかもテレシコワが宇宙空間を漂う
自分を詩的に表現したかのごとく広まって
しまった。
ちなみにガガーリンの乗ったボストーク１号は
『ケードル＝杉の木』と呼ばれていた。
もしもこれが６号のコールサインだったとしたら、
誤訳されることはなかったかも知れない。
061 – The Cat Locked in the Box
Refers to "Schrödinger's Cat," a thought experiment
intended as a critique of quantum probability theories
proposed by Bohr and Heisenberg (the so-called Copenhagen
interpretation). Suppose that a cat was put in a box equipped
with a mechanism that would emit poisonous gas if a certain
radioactive material decays.
According to the Copenhagen interpretation, the micro-world
phenomena such as radioactive emission are probabilistic by
nature.
Therefore, in this experiment, as it is caused by one such
phenomenon, the life/death status of the cat itself ends up
being probabilistic as well.
This means the cat is both dead and alive at the same time.
No certain conclusion to its state can be made until the box
is open. The paradox embodied by that cute cat became one of
the prime buzzwords of the era that marked the birth of
quantum mechanics.

ボーアやハイゼンベルグらコペンハ−ゲン学派の
確率論的世界観を批判した例え話。
放射性物質が崩壊すると猛毒ガスが放出される
箱の中に猫を入れるとする。

Benzodiazepine, an anti-anxiety agent.
Binds to BZD receptors, as well as GABA-A receptors,
suppresses nerve stimulation and puts the body in a relaxed state.
Results in anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), sedative-hypnotic
(sleep-inducing), muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant action.
Its anxiolytic (tranquilizer) effect is so powerful, it is said
that it is five times more potent than average anti-anxiety drugs.
After taking the drug, the highest concentration in the
bloodstream will be achieved after an hour.
The manifestation of its effects is somewhat sped up.
Its half life within the bloodstream is 6〜20 hours.
The drug is classified as having short to medium-term effects.
It is a very useful drug, because its drowsiness side effect
for a minor tranquilizer is relatively weak.

065 – Hippocampus
A part of the cerebral cortex,
the hippocampus controls the functions of
desire, instinct, the autonomic nerves, and so on.
Due to its responsibility for deciding the level of urgency
of received information and storing memory in other parts
of the brain, it is referred to as the "memory factory."
It is said that without the hippocampus, a person won't beam
able to remember what had happened even five minutes ago.
Additionally, it is not simply the case that "one becomes
forgetful with age." Adults, because of having a much greater
store of memories than children, are said to take much longer
to remember a single essential piece of information.

The smallest unit of a physical quantity which can be
expressed using values limited to a set of integers within
a certain range, rather than continuous values.
In 1900, Max Planck proposed the idea of a quantum energy
(the quantum hypothesis) that spawned the beginning of
quantum theory. Subsequently, Albert Einstein suggested
the existence of a light quantum (photon), and Niels Bohr
demonstrated the angular momentum quantum.

連続的でなく、ある単位量の整数倍に限られる値
（とびとびの値）で表される、物理量の最小単位。
1900年にプランクがエネルギー量子の考え
（量子仮説）を提唱し、量子論の端緒になった。

067 – Quantum Mechanics
The study of molecules, atoms and subatomic particles; in
short, the dynamics of matter and energy on a microscopic level.
It introduced the principles in the Schrödinger equation,
conducted probabilistic explanations between values that can
be obtained from observation, postulated the wave-particle
duality of matter, and explained the uncertainty relationship
in measurements.
Quantum mechanics serves as the theoretical foundation of
modern physics, which concerns particles as well as particle
bodies. Additionally, it paved the way for the development of
the physical/atomic theory, elementary particle theory, and the
field theory.

(a.k.a. Wave Equation)
In quantum mechanics, the Schrödinger Equation is a
differential equation that describes the changes over time of
the quantum state of a system. It can be shown formally that
evolution of the wave function is given in the equation by
the Hamiltonian operator, which corresponds to the total
energy of the system.
シュレディンガー方程式
別名：波動方程式。
量子力学で、物質波を表す
波動関数の時間的変化を決める微分方程式。
系の全エネルギーに対応する演算子

069 – Wave Function
The wave function is a function of space coordinates and
time that describes the current state of a particle.
It satisfies the Schrödinger equation and possibly the Dirac
equation, and proves the wave property of quantum particles.
From the square of its absolute value, it can give the existing
probability of a particle. In this sense, the wave function
is referred to as the probability amplitude.

070 – EPR
An abbreviation composed of the first letters
of the names of three physicists:
Einstein=E,
Podolsky=P,
Rosen=R.
These three presented the "EPR Paper" to argue against
the concept of the "Uncertainty Principle" of quantum mechanics.
This opposition was especially pronounced in the case of Einstein,
summed up by his famous remark "God does not play dice."
Although fully recognizing its usefulness, he was known to be
uncomfortable with and to oppose quantum mechanics until his
death because of its inability to definitely describe the
microscopic aspects of physical reality. Einstein conducted
many thought experiments that criticized quantum mechanics
and troubled his opponent Niels Bohr (one of the founders of
quantum mechanics).

071 – Uncertainty Principle
In quantum mechanics, the uncertainty principle states that,
regarding a particle's position and momentum, energy and
time, and other pairs of physical properties, one cannot
accurately measure and determine both pairs simultaneously.
The uncertainty relationship, which states that "the product
of the uncertainty of the two values cannot be smaller than
a fixed proportion of Planck's constant" holds true.
It was derived by Werner Heisenberg in 1927.
不確定性原理
量子力学において、粒子の位置と運動量、
エネルギーと時間などの一組の物理量について、
その両者を同時に正確に測定し、決定することは
できないことをいう。

072 – EPR Paper
A paper published by Albert Einstein, Boris Podolsky, and
Nathan Rosen. Also known as the EPR Paradox.
It presents a thought experiment that is extremely critical
of quantum mechanics, and was originally published by Einstein
and his coauthors as an attack on it. Ironically, it ended
up having the opposite effect, and became the best material
for deepening one's understanding of the field.
The details of the experiment are as follows:
According to quantum theory, when two particles are created at
some location by the same event, they share a certain kind of
state. For example, a stationary π-meson decays into two photons
traveling in opposite directions, but both members of the photon
pair are represented with a single Schrödinger equation.
Quantum theory states that as long as they aren't observed,
the particles can be expressed by the same equation forever.
So even if one of them flies a long distance away, if
you observe some information about it——such as spin or
polarization——then you should know the state of the particle that
remained behind. But at the moment that you observe one particle,
the wave function of the other particle collapses accordingly,
appearing as if the measured information had been instantly
transmitted from one to the other.
The EPR paper argues that this is a violation of causality.
However, modern quantum mechanics has successfully come up with a
proper explanation, and experimental results that support it have
been published one after another.

073 – Particle Pair Generation
As an example of an established method, the following
procedure exists. When the UV laser beam interacts with a
crystal of non-linear optical material such as barium borate,
each single photon splits into two other photons with long
wavelengths. These split photons travel along the contours of
two cones that, in turn, are symmetric about the initial beam.
The points where the contours of the two cones intersect have
photons in the state of entanglement, i.e. there is no
distinction as to their origins there. What is known about
these entangled photons is that their polarization is mutually
orthogonal, however it is impossible to definitely know their
respective deflection angles. This method of creating
entangled photons is called parametric down-conversion.

074 – Alice and Bob
In cryptography, the one conveying the information is commonly
referred to as Alice, while the recipient is referred to as Bob.
This naming convention was first used in a 1978 article
presenting the RSA cryptosystem.
Additionally, a person found to be intercepting communications
(i.e. through a bug or wiretap) between Alice and Bob is
customarily referred to as Eve.
アリスとボブ
暗号業界では、
情報の送信者のことをアリス（Alice）、
受信者のことをボブ（Bob）と呼ぶのが
慣例となっている。
この呼び方は1993年に発表された
量子テレポーテーションに関する論文で
用いられたことが発端となっている。
なお余談であるが、アリスとボブに対して、
両者で取り交わされる情報を
傍受（盗聴）しようとする存在をイヴ（Eve）と

075 – Entanglement
A form of quantum superposition.
Refers to a situation in which a system of several
quantum bits, in accordance with the laws of quantum
mechanics, forms an inseparable state and behaves as
if it were a single entity.
Note: "inseparable state" is a quantum mechanics term.
It's basically just a synonym for "entangled state" though.
絡み合いの状態

076 – Quantum Bit
Refers to a new unit of information content, different from
the classical bit (information represented by a binary digit,
0, off, or 1, on) used in modern computers (von Neumann machines).
A physical state in which "0" and "1" overlap (a quantum
superposition) is treated as an operational unit.
Also known as a qubit. Computers that use them are called
quantum computers, and are capable of carrying out
very fast calculations (massively parallel computation).

2003年現在で主流になっているコンピューター
（ノイマン型コンピューター）で使われている
古典ビット（０と１——OFFかONか——の２進数で
表わされる情報）にとって代わる新たな情報量を

077 – Quantum Computer
A computer which creates a superposition of two states
as a single element and performs calculations using both states.
(A von Neumann computer can only perform a single calculation
per element.)
Because of this, if there are ten elements, the number of
calculations it can perform simultaneously rises to 2^10 (1024).
As more elements are added, the computational power grows
dramatically. The speed this computer boasts of can truly
be called wondrous.

つくって、その両方の状態を計算に使う。

078 – Bell Measurement
A method of placing an isolated pair of particles in an
entangled state, and then observing both of them at the same
time in a way that doesn't permit them to be distinguished
from each other (in order to maintain the entanglement).
Since the particles must be passed through a beam splitter
(such as a half-silvered mirror) at exactly the same time,
this is extremely difficult in practice.
ベル測定
すでに孤立しているふたつの粒子を
絡み合いの状態にして、
ふたつの粒子を区別できないように
（絡み合いの状態を維持しつつ）同時に
観測する方法。

In a unitary space, a linear transformation which preserves
the value of the Hermitian inner product of two arbitrary
vectors before and after the transformation.
Suppose we denote the adjoint of an n-by-n matrix M as M*.
Then M is unitary if it is a complex-valued square matrix
fulfilling the equation M*M = MM* = E, where E is the identity
matrix of order n.

080 – Business Enterprise
A joint Japanese-German pharmaceutical company.
Its head office is in Frankfurt and the majority of its staff
are German. An internationally renowned drug manufacturer,
its capital is generated worldwide, and it has very strong
ties with the governments of several countries. The company's
area of expertise isn't limited to the pharmaceutical sector,
but includes a wide range of business endeavors, such as the
management of recreational facilities and so on.
An example of this would be an ocean theme park called LeMU
which the company manages (strictly speaking, they provide
funding to "LeMU Ltd.," the park management organization).
Additionally, regarding their microorganism research, it is
said that the company owns one of the top research facilities
in the field. However, this business enterprise has a hidden
agenda. They are, in fact, developing biological weapons for
military purposes. It seems that the company is amassing huge
amounts of capital from several countries for the purpose of
developing highly lethal viruses and their respective cures.
It might seem as though this microorganism research is the
extent of the company's hidden dark side, but in fact, as
suggested by its public face as a company specializing in the
field of pharmaceuticals, much of their medical research is
conducted using inhumane practices. Among their activities
are using human test subjects without any regard to basic
civil rights; the research, development, synthesis, and
refinement of illegal drugs; expanding profit by trafficking
their drugs on the black market....
Furthermore, according to certain sources, the company has
recently ventured into the area of long-range missile
development as a result of its ties with a certain heavy
chemical enterprise. In fact, their deep involvement with
information engineering- and quantum physics-related
research projects would perhaps best be explained as an
investment for the sole purpose of subsequent adoption of
technologies developed thereof into military use. In short,
it would take ages to even try and enumerate all of their
wrongdoings. A pharmaceutical company with a reputation this
bad—— and yet, this is merely a glimpse of all the darkness
the world possesses.

日独合弁の製薬会社。
本社はフランクフルトにあり、役員の大半も
ドイツ人で占められている。
国際的に有名な製薬メーカーであり、
その資本は全世界に展開し、
各国政府中枢との結びつきも非常に強い。
その事業内容は製薬関係だけに留まらず、
娯楽施設の運営等、多岐に渡っている。
例えば、海洋テーマパーク『LeMU』の運営
（正確にはLeMUを運営する『㈱LeMU』への出資）が
それに相当する。
また細菌研究においては、全世界でも１，２を争う
研究施設を有していると言われている。
だが、その企業には裏の顔がある。
それは細菌兵器による軍事展開だ。
致死性の高いウイルスとその特効薬の開発により
各国から莫大な富を得ているらしい。
さて、細菌研究ばかりに暗部を抱えているように
思われがちだが、
製薬会社という体制が示すとおり、
薬品研究の方面でも非人道的な研究が
行われている。
人権を無視した人体実験や、非合法な薬品の
研究・開発・調合・精製、裏社会を通じての
ドラッグのマーケット展開……。
また、ある情報筋によれば、最近、
ある重化学企業と提携し、
長距離ミサイルの研究にも着手したとか。
情報工学や量子物理学の研究・開発に熱心
なのは、それもすべて軍事方面へ転用するための
投資であると言えるのかも知れない。
つまりは、
この企業の悪行を挙げればキリがないのである。
悪名高き製薬会社——
しかしそれは、世界におけるごく一部の闇に
過ぎないのだ。

between its vertices in equilibrium, seem to be six.
As for where do these positions lie exactly,
it is as follows....

Aosagi Island" and "point: Mount Akakura" as ｒ.
Next, draw two circles of a radius ｒ, centered on "point:

087 – Many-Worlds Interpretation
In science fiction literature and the like, authors sometimes
include settings called "parallel worlds." A common setup
is for the protagonist to see worlds that are very similar
to the one we live in, but are different in subtle ways.
Every time the protagonist makes a choice in life, several
worlds diverge from that point based on the number of
alternatives.
It turns out that a similar way of thinking also exists
in physics. This is the so-called "many-worlds interpretation,"
proposed by a scholar named Hugh Everett. It elaborates on
the quantum mechanical way of thinking, and is competitive
with the current mainstream interpretation of quantum
mechanics. In quantum mechanics, both matter and energy are
seen as a certain kind of "wave." To avoid confusion, the
word "wave" here refers strictly to waves in the world of
quantum mechanics, rather than the concept of waves in
classical theory which are transmitted and spread outward
in all directions. Quantum mechanical waves are basically
"waves of probability."
When dealing with the world on a microscopic scale, there
is a restriction that prevents an object's position and
momentum from both being known simultaneously (the uncertainty
principle), meaning that you can only say the object exists
in a particular place with some probability. Because of this,
quantum mechanics considers the existence of the object from
a probabilistic perspective. The mathematical tool used to
describe this phenomenon is called a "wave function."
Before looking at the many-worlds interpretation, we'll
try thinking about how standard quantum mechanics currently
explains the world. For example, consider a single electron.
Before you perform the act of observing that it exists in
a particular location, its existence is spread out in a
probabilistic way due to uncertainty.
Until you actually look at it, its existence is described
by assigning a probability to all of the places where it
could possibly exist. In this state, we call it an
"electron cloud."
Now, suppose you were to use some method to observe the
electron. At that moment, assuming that the electron's
position was determined, the previously spread-out cloud
would immediately gather at that single observed point
(likewise for momentum). This is called a "wave function
collapse"; it basically means that the act of observing
the electron, which was previously viewed as a probability
distribution, renders its fixed existence as a real phenomenon.
This explanation is known as the "Copenhagen interpretation,"
and is considered mainstream in modern quantum mechanics.
Now then, what about the rivaling many-worlds interpretation?
It agrees with the Copenhagen interpretation on the treatment
of the electron's existence as a probability distribution.
The question is, what happens after the moment the electron is
observed? Under the many-worlds interpretation, the probability
distribution is considered to be maintained regardless of whether
the electron is observed or not. But what does that mean?
For example,
when an observer confirms that the electron is in a particular
position, the other possibilities don't just disappear.
Instead, they actually persist in other worlds the observer
can't perceive. It's not such a ridiculous idea. Isn't it
because we can't perceive them in our world that we say
"they don't exist"? Certainly, if an observer observes that
a possibility doesn't exist, then it doesn't exist in his
world. However, "it does exist" in the worlds of observers
other than that one.
In other words, under the many-worlds interpretation,
even the observers are explained probabilistically
(the wave function does not only consist of the target of
observation, but also the observer's entire space-time).
That means that every possibility, which has a non-zero
probability, exists at the same time. Every possible world
advances simultaneously, which can be interpreted as truly
"many worlds."
If you think about it, the main point is this:
observers and observed things are made from the same
substance to begin with. There's no reason whatsoever for
an interpretation to distinguish between the two.
Someone who dislikes the idea of a person receiving
special treatment might find the many-worlds interpretation
easy to warm up to. It gives the impression that it was
originally created for the purpose of explaining why waves
should suddenly collapse at the moment of observation.
In that sense, perhaps we can say it has advanced a step beyond
the present-day standard quantum mechanics as a theory.
多世界解釈
ＳＦなどで『パラレルワールド（並行世界）』という
世界が登場することがある。
よくある設定が、
私達が暮らしているこの世界にとても良く
似ているが、どこか微妙に異なった部分を
持つ世界、主人公などの主観で見る場合、
その主人公が人生において何か選択をする度に、
その選択肢の数だけそこで世界が分岐している、
というようなものである。
実は物理学にもこれに似た考え方がある。
エベレットという学者が唱えた『多世界解釈』と
呼ばれる世界観がそれである。
これは、量子力学の考え方の拡張であり、
現在メインストリームとなっている量子力学の
解釈と競合する形で、現在に至っている。
量子力学では、物質やエネルギーなどを、
ある種の“波”として解釈する。
誤解なきよう、ここでいう『波』とは、
あくまで量子力学の世界で考える波であり、
古典論で述べられるような縦横に広がって伝わる
あの波ではない。
量子力学的な波とは、
簡単にいえば『確率の波』である。
何かがそこに存在することを、
それが存在する確率で議論するのだが、
このときの『何か』の位置と運動量というのは
同時に特定できない、という、ミクロ世界を
扱うときの要請がある（不確定性原理）。
このことから、その『何か』の存在について、
量子力学では確率的に見ることになる。
そのような状態を表現する道具として『波動関数』
というものが用いられる。
多世界解釈の前に、
まず、現在スタンダードな量子力学では、
世界をどう解釈するか、ということを考えてみる。
例えば、あるひとつの電子がある場所に
存在することを、観測という行為をするまで、
不確定性によって確率的にわーっと広がった
ような状態で存在する、と考える。
それを実際に見るまでは、
それが存在しうる場所に確率を求めて、
その広がりで解釈するのである。
このような状態を『電子雲』と呼ぶ。そして、
その電子を、何らかの方法で観測したとする。
このとき、仮にその位置が特定されたとすると、
それまで広がっていた雲は、その観測した一点に
シュッと集まることになる（運動量でも同様）。
これを『波束の収縮』というが、要は、
それまで確率分布として見ていた電子を、
観測という行為をした時点で、電子の存在が
現実の事象として確定する、というわけである。
このような解釈は
『コペンハーゲン解釈』と呼ばれており、
現在の量子力学のメインストリームとなっている。
さて、対抗馬の多世界解釈ではどうか？
その電子の存在を確率分布として見る
ところまでは、コペンハーゲン解釈と同じである。
問題は、それを観測するという行為が
発生した時点から後である。
多世界解釈では、それを観測しようがしまいが、
その確率分布は持続している、と考える。
どういうことか？
例えば、
ある一点にその電子の位置を特定したとき、
それ以外の可能性が消えるのでなく、やはり、
その観測者には認識できない世界で続いている、
と考えるのである。そんな馬鹿な話はない。
私達の世界に認識できないのだから、
それは『ない』ということではないか。
確かに、そう観測した観測者の世界にはないが、
その観測者以外の観測者の世界には
『ある』のである。
つまり、多世界解釈では、観測者をも巻き込んで
確率解釈しているのである
（観測対象だけでなく、観測対象と
それを観測する観測者が存在する時空全体も
その波動関数に含まれている）。
そうなると、確率がゼロでない限りの可能性は、
全て同時に存在していることになる。
可能性のある限りの世界が同時進行して
いるのだ。
まさに『多世界』。
考えてみれば、この考え方は的を得ている。
観測対象も、その観測者も、
もとは同じ物質からできている構造物である。
それらを差別して解釈する理由はどこにもない。
誰かが特別扱いを受けるのは納得いかん、という
方には、この多世界解釈は馴染みやすいか。
もともと、この多世界解釈は、
何故観測した時点で突然波が収縮するのか？
という問題を解決する為に考案されたという
印象がある。
その意味で、現在のスタンダードな量子力学を
一歩踏み越えた先進的な理屈、
といえるかもしれない。

Means "beloved" in Hebrew.
The Biblical David from whom this name is derived
was the second king of ancient Israel
who established Jerusalem as its capital,
united Israel
and built Israel's era of prosperity.
King David excelled in battle tactics, and the mystics
who felt that sorcery was behind those tremendous abilities
thought that the battle flag of David was undoubtedly
a "demon-summoning charm."
The symbol David used as an emblem is known as "the Star of David."
It is also believed to be a crest that protects Israel from
danger; the symbol can be found in the Israeli national flag.
In Japan, the Star of David, called the "rokubousei" (六芒星),
or hexagram, is known as the crest of the Ise Grand Shrine.
The symbol that holds the opposite meaning to the Star of David
is the "gobousei" (五芒星), or pentagram, also called "the Star
of Solomon." The magical power of the Star of Solomon seals
the inner demons inside the infinity loop.

その名の由来となったダビデは、
古代イスラエルの２代目の王であり、
エルサレムを都に定め、イスラエルを統一し、
イスラエルの最盛期を築いたとされている。
ダビデ王は戦略に優れ、あまりの強さに
魔術的なものを感じた秘術師達は、

He was truly the king whom the people had wished for,

Certainly, as a king and as a warrior,
he might never have known defeat.
However, he failed in his God-given mission
to become an instrument of the Lord.
Though anointed by God to become "an instrument of the Lord,"
as the king of God's people, he did not. The reason is that
Saul disobeyed the will of God....
Saul was forsaken by God, and met a tragic end.

ヘブライ語で『求められた者』の意。
その名の由来となったサウルは、
古代イスラエルの初代の王。
まさに王として民から求められ、
その期待に応える人だった。
確かに、王として、武人として、
引けを取らぬ人物だったかもしれない。
しかし彼は、
神によって立てられた神の器であることには、
失格者となった。
彼は、神に求められた『神の器』たる、
神の民の王とはならなかった。なぜならば、
サウルは神に背いてしまったから……。

"Chance meeting" means to meet somebody

In relation to that, what Utsumi might have thought at that
time is likely to be something unimaginable.
After all, it's not a usual sight to see your husband
who has been dead for a year suddenly appearing in front of you.
Not to mention it happened here in this hellish world of snow....
At least, Utsumi hasn't yet considered the idea that this
place is some kind of heaven.
邂逅
『邂逅』とは、思いがけず出逢うこと、
めぐり逢うことの意である。
余談だが、このとき内海が何を思ったのかは
想像を絶するものがある。
なにしろ、１年前に死んだはずの夫が、

Let's reflect a bit on the consequences
of the alarm clock being wrong.
Why is it that just because it was 33 minutes fast,
Kokoro and I have assumed that our minds
were exchanging simultaneously?
The reason is as follows....
First, for example let's suppose that the transfer occurs at 1:00.

Kokoro's mind comes to SPHIA.
There, she looks at the incorrect alarm clock.
She mistakes the mistaken time it shows, which is "1:33,"
for the actual time of the transfer.

There, she looks at her wristwatch.
She sees the correct time of the transfer, which is "2:06."
Seeing as she had transferred to SPHIA at 1:33

Indeed, there is no mistake in that the time
of her stay at SPHIA was 33 minutes.
However, from 1:33 until 2:06, her mind was actually in the
third area. It is from this perspective that we could say that
she is mistaken about the time of the transfer.
Well then (since the times of her transfers from the
shelter cabin are random), let's assume that
one more hour has passed.

She looks at the alarm clock.

In my case, it is true both that the time of my
stay at the shelter cabin is 33 minutes, and that from
1:33 to 2:06, I was in the shelter cabin.
Thus, I am always aware of the correct times of the transfers.
Well then, since the moment when I transfer from SPHIA
is simultaneous with Kokoro's transfer from the shelter cabin,
let's assume that one more hour has passed.

オレとこころは同時刻に入れ替わっていると
思い込んでしまったのだろうか？

彼女は転移時刻と勘違いする。

『２時６分』という正確な時刻を彼女は知る。

096 – Baby Colic
Here is one of the theories about baby colic.
Why does "baby colic" occur in infants?
"Baby colic" is a condition in which a baby
becomes unsettled and irritable for no apparent reason,
and cries frequently (e.g. at night). It is normally
categorized as abnormal neuronal excitability
resulting from dysautonomia in infants,
but the exact reasons for its occurrence remain unclear.
One explanation suggested
that the contrast between the clear,
vivid consciousness of an infant and the inability
to properly control its body results in an intense stress
for the baby, which could cause it to become irritated and cry.
That is why, from the point of view of an adult,
it seems that they are just crying for no reason.
There are also medics who suppose that if a baby was given a
body which would properly obey its will, it would turn into
a cold-blooded killer. They argue that since babies have not
yet learned human morals, their instincts would cause them
to go on a bloody rampage. Infants often exhibit cruelty.
They can calmly kill other living beings with no reservation,
thinking it nothing more than part of a game.
As a person grows up, when they reach the age of about three,
they come to be able to think from the perspective of
other people, and put themselves in their shoes; the ability
to empathize is established. It is at that age that they learn
for the first time that things which one doesn't like being
done to them must never be done to others as well. Perhaps this
is the reason why human infants are so underdeveloped in
physical strength compared with other mammals.
This represents a considerable obstacle in the newborn's path
to survival, but in fact, it is actually not so far-fetched
a thought that it is rather the lives of adults that would
be in danger if it was the other way around.
It is not impossible to imagine that it is through realizing
the need to protect each other from this inner cruelty, the
nature of brutality unparalleled in any other life form, that
humankind has come, over the course of evolution, to create
the civilization in which we live, and to establish the
education system as a means for spiritual growth.
Additionally, it makes sense to think that the fact that
as-of-yet mentally undeveloped newborns are deprived of
physical strength lies in accordance with the principle of
natural selection. "Baby colic," being a representation of
the instinctive desires, makes known the true nature of man.
It is the scream of madness, and at the same time, the
pathetic lamentation of having been given life in this world.

自分がされたら嫌なことは、
他者に対しても決してしてはいけないのだと、
このときになって初めて学ぶ。
乳児の体力が他の哺乳類に比べて未熟なのは
このためではないだろうか。
それは乳児の生存にとって著しく不利ではあるが、
実はそうでなければ、
むしろ成人の生命の方が脅かされることにも
なりかねないのだ。
他のあらゆる生物の中で、
比類なき残虐性向を有するこの人類は、
進化の途上に於いて、
この内なる残虐性から互いの身を守るために、
文化を確立し、教育によって精神の向上を
はかるに至ったと考えることもできなくはない。
またそれとともに、精神の未発達な乳児からは、
自然淘汰的に体力が奪われていったのだとも
考えられる。
『疳の虫』は本能的な欲求の発露であるがゆえに、
人間の本質を知らしめる。
それは狂気の叫び声であると同時に、
この世に生を受けたことに対する哀切な

Enomoto Naoya mainly appears in the SPHIA side of the story.
He is Satoru's colleague. Together with Satoru, he created
the space-time warping device and executed the "project."
He continues to monitor the progress of the plan from
beneath SPHIA.
